African American
n.p., ca. 1890
African American 19th C. Photo Album - Children, Cotton, Montgomery, AL and more!
Photograph

Captivating collection of late nineteenth century photographs, many depicting African American life in the south at the time, including a period photo album, 10.25" x 7.25", bound in black leather with the word "Photographs" embossed in gold on the cover, with ten pages filled with small photos (average size of individual photos is 2.25" x 2.25") and numerous additional pages never used. Most photographs remain attached to the page with the original glue, but a few have come loose, allowing the hand-written captions to be read and adding rich detail to the grouping. Also includes two stereoscopic viewer cards depicting African American children, one measuring 6" x 3.5" by Strohmeyer & Wyman, 1892, the other by H.L. Roberts & Co. Publishers, 7" x 3.5". Varying condition, some of the photos in the album that have come loose show creasing, stereoscopic cards show some toning. Overall fine condition.

Scenes from the photo album depict both rural and urban life, with mostly African American and some white subjects, as well as photos with interracial subjects. Many photos of children, crop picking scenes, family photos and more. Some architectural photographs allow the scenes to be identified as Alabama (the Alabama State Capital Building) but other locales could be included. Some of the hand-written captions that are visible on the verso of some of the loose photographs include: "Cotton wagons Court Square", "Exchange Hotel", "Decatur St. School", "our house", "mule team", "negro cabin built of logs and slabs", and "Richard". Altogether these photographs offer an intimate glimpse into African American life in the south at the end of the nineteenth century.
