Description:

Sullivan C. Richardson
Detroit, MI, ca. 1942
"Adventure South" 2x Signed & Inscribed by Author Sullivan C. Richardson, Drove Cross-Continent in 1941
Signed book

A first edition copy of "Adventure South" by Sullivan C. Richardson, a firsthand account of the author's road trip across two continents. Detroit: Arnold-Powers Inc., 1942. Octavo, 330pp. Signed on the half title page by Richardson, as well as Arnold Whitaker and Kenneth Van Hee, the two men who accompanied him on the expedition. With a lengthy inscription present above in Richardson's hand, reading in part: "To Miriam-/ Who has smiled at me many times, up in the library… and I hope you like this tale of 'damn-fool' adventure./ Sullie". Publisher's original blue cloth boards with gilt detailing to front cover and spine. Illustrated map endpapers. Numerous black and white photographs throughout. Exhibits expected shelf wear with light soiling and corner bumping present. General age toning within. Areas of loose or cracked binding, but otherwise in tact. Overall, very good.

Richardson's expedition began on November 17, 1940 with the ambitious undertaking of traveling by car from Detroit to the bottom of South America in Cape Horn. The three men, traveling in a 1940 Plymouth sedan, were dubbed the "Damn Fools" by friends and foes alike. Amazingly, with only occasional assistance from mules, trucks, passers-by and boats, their expedition successfully arrived in Chile in the summer of 1941. The feat often required "creative" driving methods in some areas, such as in southern Costa Rica, where there was no road at all.
