Halsey William

Admiral William Halsey Signed Time Cover Weeks after Guadalcanal

A November 30, 1942 issue of Time Magazine (Volume XL, Number 22) featuring U.S. Navy commander William Halsey, Jr. (1882-1959) on the front cover, signed and inscribed by him as: "For Alex Nahas / W.F. Halsey." With vividly colored and entirely intact front and back softcovers, and colored insets found within. Expected wear includes a few wrinkles and scuffed binding, else near fine. Overall light toning. 108pp. 8.25" x 11.5".

The front cover is based on an original Douglas Florian illustration depicting then Vice Admiral Halsey. (Halsey would be promoted to the rank of 4-star Admiral on November 18, 1942, just twelve days before this issue hit newsstands, but after Florian's drawing was complete.) The naval commander looks resolute and strong. He stands against a blue backdrop studded with stylized puzzle-piece Japanese islands. The front cover is captioned "Halsey of the South Pacific / When an attacker is attacked … "

This issue of Time was released three weeks after Halsey's participation in the crucial naval phase of the Battle of Guadalcanal (August 1942-February 1943.) Halsey was already widely lauded for his part in the battle. His aggressive tactics and determined leadership were credited with securing an American victory.

Time's Cover Story entitled "Hit Hard, Hit Fast, Hit Often" appears under the "World Battlefronts / Battle of the Pacific" category between p. 28-31. The article outlines Halsey's significant role in the recent Battle for Guadalcanal. It includes many Halsey quotes, any one of which could serve as battle cries: "Hit Hard, Hit Fast, Hit Often," "Kill Japs, kill Japs, and then kill more Japs," "Attack. Repeat: Attack," and "You can't make an omelet without breaking the eggs."

William Halsey was a career naval officer whose most famous command was of the South Pacific Area during World War II. After spearheading action in the Battle of Guadalcanal and in the Solomon Islands, Halsey participated in the pivotal Battle of Leyte Gulf. Halsey was promoted to the 5-star rank of Fleet Admiral towards the end of his 55-year-long naval career.

Autograph recipient Alexander F. Nahas (1920-2016) was born in Marseilles to a missionary family. He later lived in Danbury, Connecticut and became a merchant marine and government bureaucrat.
