Description:

Nimitz Chester

Admiral Nimitz, After Establishing the Military Government of the Marshall Islands, Orders the Surrender of Firearms, Ammunition, Explosives, and Radio Sets to the U.S. Forces

Printed Document Signed by order of "C. W. Nimitz" as "Admiral, United States Navy, / Commander in Chief, / United States Pacific Fleet and / Pacific Ocean Areas, / MILITARY GOVERNOR OF THE MARSHALL ISLANDS," 1 page, 12.5" x 9.25". [February 1944.] Rolled. Scattered creases. Repaired long diagonal tear to the left of Nimitz's signature, repaired tears and infill at lower right edge. Very good condition.

In both English and Japanese, the printed typed document was issued after Admiral Nimitz's first proclamation, dated January 31, 1944, establishing a military government in the Marshall Islands. On each atoll, the Civil Affairs Officer read the proclamation establishing a U.S. Military Government in the name of Admiral C. W. Nimitz, Military Governor of the Marshall Islands, and the American flag was raised. It was reported that by February 4th, copies of the proclamation were already nailed on the walls of police stations, village structures, and trees and that addition orders and ordinances were being prepared by the military government. The copies of Nimitz's proclamations, orders, and ordinances were not personally signed by Nimitz; the one here offered is.
Headed: "N O T I C E / SURRENDER / YOUR FIREARMS, AMMUNITION, RADIO SENDING SETS / Notice is hereby given that all / Firearms, / Ammunition, / Explosives of any kind, / Radio sending sets, / must be surrendered to the nearest officer of the United States Forces on this island. / These must be surrendered / before ______________" The date is not filled in.

It continues, all in upper case:
"Any person found in possession of any of the named articles after the time and date stated may be punished by death or imprisonment at hard labor." Concluding, "By order of [ signed C.W. Nimitz] C.W. NIMITZ, Admiral, United States Navy, Commander in Chief, United States Pacific Fleet and Pacific Ocean Areas, MILITARY GOVERNOR OF THE MARSHALL ISLANDS". We have never seen another!
