Description:

Abraham Lincoln
n.p., ca. mid to late 19th C.
Abraham & Tad Lincoln Photo After Berger In Elegant Period Mahogany & Faux Bois Frame
Photograph

An albumen photograph of 16th U.S. President Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) and his youngest son Thomas "Tad" Lincoln (1853-1871), after an original photo taken by Anthony Berger in February 1864. N.d. but mid- to late 19th C. N.p. The enhanced photograph shows the Lincolns examining an open book, with artistically rendered details added in the background. The black and white oval-shaped photo is affixed to a gilt-bordered mat and displayed in an ornate period frame. A cancelled orange 2-cent U.S. revenue stamp has been affixed to the toned photo backing verso. The frame, which has a rich mahogany finish, is decorated with faux bois painted plaster bas relief vegetal clusters. Isolated surface and color loss to the frame. The photograph has not been examined out of the frame. The actual size of the photo is approximately 5.375" x 7.625" while the overall frame measures roughly 12.25" x 14.25" x 1.625".

This photograph was unique during Lincoln's lifetime in that it emphasized Lincoln's humanity and paternity instead of his political identity. Taken by Mathew Brady's colleague Anthony Berger on February 9, 1864, the candid family portrait was unauthorized by Brady. Berger's afternoon session was extremely successful and resulted in some of the best-known portraits of Abraham Lincoln. At that fruitful session, Berger overcame difficulties with lighting as well as unexpected delays caused by Tad's locking the door and absconding with the key!
