Description:

Abraham Lincoln
[Fort Wayne, IN], ca. early 20th C.
Abraham Lincoln War Toll Photo, Early 20th C. Fancy Parlor Reprint
Photograph

A photographic print of 16th U.S. President Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865), after Alexander Gardner's original portrait taken in early 1865, produced by Fort Wayne, Indiana photographer Edward F. Perrey (1868-1934). N.d. but probably sometime in the early 20th C. [Fort Wayne, Indiana.] The sepia-colored albumen photograph is affixed to a fancy mat blind-embossed with floral garlands. With a facsimile signature/studio name appearing in the lower right corner of the mat as "Perrey / Ft. Wayne / Ind." Isolated lightening to Lincoln's hair and right shoulder, with a small area of discoloration. Scattered superficial scuffs. Pen- and pencil-inscribed by former collectors verso; the pen inscription is illegible. Else very good. The actual size of the photographic print is 2.75" x 3.625" while the overall mount measures 5" x 7". Meserve No. 97.

The exact dating of the original photograph is in question. In the opinion of world-renowned Lincoln collector Frederick H. Meserve, the original photograph was taken by Alexander Gardner (1821-1882) on April 9, 1865. The Illinois History and Lincoln Collections at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign supports the former collector's attribution of April 10, 1865. Most modern Lincoln scholars contend that this portrait was actually taken two months earlier than previously thought, on February 5, 1865, ten weeks before Lincoln's assassination.

Lincoln sat for over fifty official portraits from his lawyering days on the court circuit until his assassination. Lincoln had several distinctive physical characteristics: a gaunt face, a skinny neck, a large mole on his right cheek, and a slightly drooping left eyelid. Though not handsome, Lincoln possessed a plain-spun homeliness that endeared him to voters. The future president's awkward physical appearance went a long way in fostering his log cabin-born rail-splitter mystique.
