Description:

Abraham Lincoln
Washington, DC, ca. 1860s
Abraham Lincoln & Son Tad CDV
CDV

Original Civil War-era carte de visite photograph depicting President Abraham Lincoln seated with his youngest son, Tad Lincoln, both engaged in looking at a photo album or book. This iconic and intimate image was based on the famous February 9, 1864, photograph taken by Anthony Berger of Mathew Brady's studio. The card measures approximately 2.5" x 4" and displays expected age-related toning and light wear. The reverse is clearly printed with the caption: "President Lincoln, Master Thad. Lincoln." An evocative and tender portrayal of Lincoln as both leader and father, this image is a cornerstone in American photographic history. Some paper loss to corners, else fine. Measures 2.5" x 4".

This photograph captures one of the most humanizing and beloved images of Abraham Lincoln, taken during his presidency at the height of the Civil War. His son Tad Lincoln was known for his spirited personality and deep bond with his father, who often found comfort in Tad's presence amidst national turmoil. The original 1864 sitting resulted in several variants, often reissued in CDV format for public consumption. In a time before mass media, such images helped cultivate a relatable image of Lincoln as a family man. The intimate composition of father and son in quiet reflection contrasts sharply with the burdens Lincoln carried as a wartime president.
