Description:

Lincoln Abraham

"Springfield Marine & Fire Insurance Company" signed transport card, 3.5" x 2". Dated "March 5, 1864", and boldly signed by Abraham Lincoln as President as "A. Lincoln", allowing for the provided and safe transport home for an honorably discharged military man, J. Copley Worthington.

The card is dated and penned in another hand. "Allow the bearer, J. Lesley Worthington, honorably discharged from the Military service, have transportation home to New Hampshire. A.Lincoln, March 5, 1864".

The neatly penned card appears to have had the intent to be carried on the person during his transit back home. The Lincoln papers include a transcript of the original letter from Worthington.

"J. Copley Worthington to Abraham Lincoln, March 5, 1864, Washington, March 5th, 1864.

Honored Sir.

To be brief, I am a discharged New Hampshire soldier. I wish to get home to vote on Tuesday and do my part towards putting down the copperheads. By taking the 7.30 p. m train to-night I shall get home Monday morning. Unfortunately, I have not the money to pay for a ticket, and having been told that clerks in the different departments have been sent home free of their expense in order to exercise their prerogatives as citizens of the Granite state, I ask for myself the same opportunity.

Yours with the utmost respect J. Copley Worthington."

An important Abraham Lincoln signed transport pass from the Civil War era for an honorably discharged member of the military.
