Description:

Abraham Lincoln
Washington, D.C., August 1, 1864
Abraham Lincoln Signed Appointment for Veteran Reserve Corps
DS
An 1864 signed military appointment by President Abraham Lincoln and Secretary of War Edwin Stanton. 1p partially printed, measuring 14.25" x 19.25", Washington, D.C., dated August 1, 1864. A military appointment boldly signed by Lincoln as "Abraham Lincoln" and countersigned "EM Stanton." The document appoints "Brazillai J. Inman…Second Lieutenant in the Veteran Reserve Corps…" With two handsome military vignettes at top and bottom. A blue paper embossed seal is present at the upper left, above which is a handwritten docket. With flattened folds. The appointment has been artfully tipped into a thicker board, which is removable, to preserve the piece. Flattened folds with edge toning and soiling. Light soiling to the signatures. There is a fold through the "Abraham" of Lincoln's signature, but still very readable and attractive.

Lt. Barzilla J. Inman was a Union officer who served with the 148th Pennsylvania. He initially enlisted in the 118th Pennsylvania Regiment on August 15, 1862. In his first battle, he was captured at Shepherdstown on September 20, 1862, but later escaped and made his way back to the Union lines. Inman fought and was wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg while with the 148th Pennsylvania; he had fallen unconscious near Trostle's Woods beneath Little Round Top and was left for dead. During the night, Inman allegedly was forced to fight off wild hogs which had begun scavenging the corpses surrounding him. He was eventually rescued and went on to be appointed to the Veteran Reserve Corps.
