Abraham Lincoln delivered the famous "Cooper Union Speech" before members of the Young Men's Republican Union assembled in the large-capacity Great Hall, Foundation Building, Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, New York City, on February 27, 1860. In the address, Lincoln argued to prohibit slavery in the western territories, responding to state's rights contentions raised by fellow Illinois politician Stephen A. Douglas and others. Lincoln divided his speech into three distinct parts, each addressed to a different group of people: to President James Buchanan and the citizens of New York; to the Southern States; and to fellow Republicans. We know exactly what Lincoln looked like on event day because Mathew Brady made a portrait of the clean-shaven Lincoln. Lincoln maintained that this Brady portrait was key to securing his party's nomination, saying in part, "Brady… made me President…"

Lincoln's Cooper Union speech was one of his longest - at 7,000 words - and one of the most important discourses of his career, marking a critical transition from a regional politician to a statesman with a national profile. Auditors were initially skeptical of the gauche Lincoln, but they responded well overall to the content and quality of Lincoln's oration. Horace Greeley, founder and editor of "The New York Tribune," was favorably impressed with Lincoln and soon became his champion. Three months later, Lincoln secured the Republican Party presidential nomination.
