Description:

Lincoln Abraham 1809 - 1865 Abraham Lincoln Proclamation of Mourning issued by Vermont just days after the assassination

Single page printed document with embossed state seal in upper left corner, 10" x 7 7/8", on buff paper. Light even creases from being folded into thirds, minor damp stain mostly along left margin recto and right margin verso outside of text, tiny tear in lower left corner, otherwise expected wear and in fine condition.

Proclamation issued by Vermont Governor J. Gregory Smith on May 11, 1865 to announce official day of mourning scheduled to take place on June 1, 1865, in accordance with directive issued from the Johnson White House approximately one month after Lincoln's assassination. June 1, 1865 was to be reserved "as a day of HUMILIATION and MOURNING in memory of that GOOD MAN who has been removed, so that all shall be occupied at the same time in contemplation of his virtues, and sorrow for his sudden and violent end..." Governor Smith further requests that Vermont citizens assemble in churches to pray for the new administration. The letter triumphantly concludes that President Lincoln's death was not in vain, as he left triple legacies of emancipation, national reunification, and moral excellence.
