"RE: Abraham Lincoln Carriage Strap/Fabric Relic

May 8, 2015

To Whom It May Concern:

This letter addresses the history (provenance) of the accompanying relic from the official carriage used to transport President Abraham Lincoln.

The item in question was originally owned by the well-known Abraham Lincoln and historical Americana collector Dr. Weldon E. Petz of Michigan. Dr. Petz passed away in 201 1 at the age of 88; his daughter, Cheryl L. Shirtz, consigned property that remained from his private collection and museum to our organization. This relic was among those items. Weldon Petz was well-known in the Lincoln and Civil War communities. His passion for historical Americana extended to many facets of our history wish his personal pursuit of relics from across the nation. His core collection, that related exclusively to Lincoln and Michigan's Iron Brigade, is now owned by the Plymouth Historical Society in Michigan. I was personally tasked with handling the balance of his private museum — including this specific relic. Petz was known for personally finding and documenting all his relics; the integrity of his collection is without equal. I personally obtained the item accompanying the original of this letter and attest herein to the accuracy of where it was obtained.

An important Lincoln relic with exceptional provenance.
