Abraham Lincoln Huge Hand-Colored Lithograph by Charles Magnus Celebrating Union Victory
Broadside
A vibrantly colored broadside lithograph entitled "After a Little While" which depicts a triumphant Abraham Lincoln at center, created following the end of the Civil War. 1p, measuring 15.5" x 20", New York, ca. 1865. Printed by notable lithographer Charles Magnus. Expected toning with areas of scattered foxing, not affecting design; some ink bleeding verso. Evidence of archival repair at lower middle, slightly bisecting the pair of clasped hands; uneven margins throughout. Otherwise, very good - an attractive and desirable image of the Reconstruction era.

A similar, less fine example sold at Swann in 2018 for $3,250.

Rejoicing in the end of the war, this print looks optimistically at the future, with clasped hands and the title "After a Little While." A crowd of men and boys doff their hats and cheer a mounted Lincoln: "All is right now! Hurrah!" To the right, a "Northern Fanatic" is imprisoned, and the crowd declares "That serves them right.", while to the lower right a "Southern Fanatic" suffers the same fate, while the crowd proclaims, "They won't do any more mischief". Below Lincoln is a red streamer reading "Union Henceforth Now and Forever" waving above a chastened Jefferson Davis, by design totally dwarfed by the triumphant image of Lincoln basking in the rays of the sun.
