Abraham Lincoln Engravings: A Funeral March and Death of President Lincoln
Broadside

A pair of nineteenth century engravings mourning the death of Abraham Lincoln.

1. The front cover (only) of the sheet music for "In memory of Abraham Lincoln: A Funeral March," by John K. Paine. Op. 9 for Piano. Engraving by Major & Knapp, New York. Printed by Beer & Schirmer, New York, c. 1865. Bottom is trimmed. A touch of toning at extreme margins but otherwise in very good condition. 9.5" x 11.75".

Thomas Knowles Paine (1839-1906) was an American composer. One of the "Boston Six," he was a pioneer in large-scale orchestral compositions and, according to "Étude" Magazine in 1906, was "The first American who won the respect of European masters by his musical abilities...also the first American to achieve something permanent in the classical forms of music."

2. Currier & Ives' "Death of President Lincoln. At Washington, D.C. April 15th 1865. The Nation's Martyr." Published 1865. Trimmed at bottom. A few chips and water stains to edges, evenly toned. 13.5" x 10".

"Death of President Lincoln" depicts Lincoln on his deathbed at the Petersen House, a boardinghouse across the street from Ford's Theater in Washington, D.C. In this symbolic image, Tad Lincoln weeps at his mother's knee beside the President's bedside, although Tad was never present at the deathbed, while Henry W. Halleck looks on at the right. Not all the people pictured were present at Lincoln's death, but the image tugged at the nation's heartstrings and sold well.
