Description:

Lincoln Abraham

Abraham Lincoln Lithograph with Decorative Hand-colored Border

ABRAHAM LINCOLN, Commemorative Lithograph with hand-colored border, c. 1865, John C. Buttre, New York.  12" x 16". Some minor foxing on edges, otherwise very good.

The lithograph is based on a three-quarter length, seated portrait of Lincoln taken by Matthew Brady on February 9, 1864.

This print includes an oval lithograph of Lincoln surrounded by a decorative border designed by German-born lithographer William Momberger (1829-1895). At the top pen, paper, and books sit atop a broken chain, while scenes show a woman struggling with a soldier and well-dressed freedpeople emerging from slavery. At the bottom an allegorical armed liberty slays the many-headed dragon of “Rebellion” and another female figure points to prosperous city and countryside. At bottom center, hands clasp over a banner that reads “The Union Forever.” Lincoln’s signature is reproduced over the words “Abraham Lincoln, 16th President of the United States / Assassinated April 14th 1865.”

John C. Buttre obtained a copyright for this image in 1864 from the federal district clerk’s office of the southern district of New York.  He apparently reissued it in 1865 after Lincoln’s Assassination with the addition of the final line.

John Chester Buttre (1821-1893) was an American steel-plate engraver and lithographer. Born in Auburn, New York, he moved to New York City in 1841 and established a successful business, eventually producing approximately 3,000 engraved portraits of American political, naval, and military personalities.
