Description:

Abraham Lincoln
[Baltimore, MD], n.d. but ca. 1860s
Abraham Lincoln CDV After Mathew Brady Published in Baltimore - Hometown of John Wilkes Booth!
CDV

A vintage carte de visite of 16th U.S. President Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865), after an original photo taken by Mathew Brady in January 1864. Published by the Baltimore, Maryland-based photography studio Selby & McCauley. N.d. but ca. 1860s. [Baltimore, Maryland.] The sepia-colored albumen photograph is affixed to a gilt-edged stock mount. The Selby & McCauley label is adhered on the reverse, and reads: "'Specialite.' / Selby & McCauley, / Photograph Album & Carte de Visite / Depot. / No. 36 West Baltimore Street." Minor loss to the upper left corner affecting both the photo and mount. Isolated scuffs to the photo surface, along with two small discolored areas near the top edge, and a small water stain just to the right of Lincoln's head. Pencil-inscribed and unevenly toned verso. Else very good. The actual size is 2.375" x 4." Housed in a contemporaneous gilt-embossed and gilt-edged photographic album sleeve measuring 4.75" x 5.75". Meserve 75.

Selby & McCauley, active in Baltimore in the 1860s, provided its customers with cartes de visites, photograph albums, stationery products, and other fancy goods. Lincoln's assassin John Wilkes Booth (1838-1865) may have been familiar with the company's storefront at No. 36 West Baltimore Street since Booth was born and raised in Baltimore.
