Abraham Lincoln and Civil War commemorative carte de visite collection


The 7-piece archive is comprised of patriotic portraits, vignettes, and composite views, all period carte de visites, celebrating Abraham Lincoln, Mary Todd Lincoln, and influential Civil War era politicians and military officers. The oblong albumen sepia and black and white photographs are mounted on cream colored stock cards measuring on average 4" x 2.5." In very good condition overall with expected wear including light foxing, toning, and a few instances of trimming.


1. S.D. Fredericks & Co. issued a bust portrait of a bearded Lincoln in 3/4 profile turned to the right. Pale green and white cartouche with publishing information verso. Lower left corner trimmed.


2. E.J. Post produced a double portrait of Washington and Lincoln entitled "The Father and the Preserver of Our Country" in 1865. Credits can be found in miniscule font below a figure of Columbia at bottom.


3. Composite view of 7 Union military commanders surrounded by a garland inscribed "Our Peace Commissioners for 1865." Featuring individual portraits of Lincoln, Grant, Sherman, Sheraton, Farragut, Thomas, and Porter.


4. Composite view of 53 Union and Confederate military commanders entitled "Statesmen & Generals of The American Civil War" featuring Washington in medallion at center. Lincoln and Union notables appear in upper half, while Davis, a beardless Lee, and other Confederate leaders appear in the lower half. Minor fold to lower left corner.


5. Portrait of Mary Todd Lincoln in white formal dress and floral wreath. Minor trimming at top. Lightening and isolated discolored mark to center of image.


6. Domestic vignette of the Lincoln family, depicting seated Lincoln surrounded by Mary and three sons.


7. Vignette of Lincoln's deathbed, the dying president flanked by Secretary of the Navy Gideon Welles and Secretary of War Edwin Stanton, with prostrate Mary Lincoln at center.
