Abraham Baldwin, Rare Constitution Signer, Signed Receipt of Accounts, Comptrollers Office, 1789



Receipt of Accounts from Comptrollers Office signed by Founding Father Abraham Baldwin as "Abram Baldwin" at bottom. Document dated February 7, 1789, 1 page, 7.5" x 9.5". Docket information located verso. Receipt reads: "Received of Olivr. Wolcott Junr. Comptroller of Accounts one Order on the Treasurer amounting thirty three Pounds fourteen shillings payable out of the Civil list funds in full for one Order in favour John Beardslee dated Novr. 3d. 1788 drawn by Wm. Saml. Johnson it being part of a balance due him as Delegate to Congress for which he is accountable".



Abraham Baldwin (1754-1807) pursued theology and ministerial studies at Yale University, graduating from there in 1772. He served as Chaplain to the Connecticut Contingent of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. Afterwards, Baldwin became a lawyer and entered Georgian state politics. He served as an extremely capable and popular Senator from Georgia between 1799 and 1807, and as President pro tempore of the U.S. Senate between December 1801-1802.
