Abe & Mary Lincoln Pair of CDVs from Brady Negatives
CDVs

A pair of cartes-de-visite of Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln.

1.) Carte-de-visite of 16th U.S. President Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865), published by E. & H.T. Anthony after a photographic negative from Mathew Brady's National Portrait Gallery. The original photograph was taken by Scottish expatriate photographer Alexander Gardner in Brady's Washington, DC studios on February 24, 1861. The sepia-toned albumen print depicts a relaxed, but serious looking Lincoln seated at a desk furnished with a brass inkwell. Publisher's backstamp at verso. Mounted to a cream colored stock card which has been trimmed to a size of 2.25" x 3.5". A former collector's pencil notations also appear verso, in addition to some staining and adhesive residue. Tear and chipping at top margin. Soiling and surface abrasions at recto. In near good condition.

2.) Carte-de-visite of First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln (1818-1882), published by E. & H.T. Anthony after a photographic negative from Mathew Brady's National Portrait Gallery. Circa 1861. The sepia-toned albumen print depicts a seated Mary Lincoln dressed in a very fashionable inaugural ball gown in silk and lace with embroidered detailing, and with a matching embellished floral headpiece. Lincoln was known to love fresh flowers and often posed with them in her hands or hair. Mounted to a cream colored stock card measuring 2.375" x 4". Publisher's backstamp at verso. A former collector's pencil notations also appear verso, in addition to some foxing and soiling. Minor surface abrasions, soiling, and adhesive residue at recto. A somewhat light impression, else very good.

Mathew Brady (1822-1896) and Alexander Gardner (1821-1882) dominated antebellum and Civil War-era American photography. Gardner, under the auspices of the Mathew Brady studio, took many iconic photographs of Lincoln including the one here offered. Gardner went on to photograph the execution of Lincoln's assassination co-conspirators. Brady was an established photographer who became even more well-known after the exhibition of his moving and gruesome battlefield photographs. Brady collaborated with another New York-based photographer, Edward Anthony (1819-1888). In addition to providing photography services, Anthony's firm sold camera supplies, backdrops, and props to the public.
