Description:

Aaron Burr Boldly Signed Free Frank & Endorsed Cover

A postal cover boldly free-franked by American politician Aaron Burr (1756-1836), as "A. Burr" in the postage section at upper right. The cover is also inscribed in Burr's hand as, "Pierpoint [sp] Edwards Esqr / New Haven." Postmarked in New York on October 9, [n.y.] Also stamped "Free" underneath Burr's signature. The cover unfolds to reveal remnants of the original red wax seal verso. Expected wear including minor ink bleed-through from the letter once contained within it but no longer included. The right edge of the cover has been unevenly torn. Else very good to near fine, with Burr's markings dark and bold. The cover folded measures 4.5" x 3.125," while it measures approximately 7.625" x 8" completely unfolded.

The postmark lacks a year, preventing us from knowing with certainty whether Burr free-franked this postal cover in his role as Vice President of the United States, from 1801-1805, or during his time as U.S. Senator from New York, from 1791-1797.

Aaron Burr sent this postal cover to his maternal uncle, Pierpont Edwards (1750-1820). (Pierpont Edwards was the youngest child of Great Awakening preacher Jonathan Edwards; Burr's mother, Esther Edwards Burr (1732-1758) was Pierpont's much older sister.) Pierpont Edwards operated a private law practice in New Haven, Connecticut after 1771. Edwards's legal career was interrupted by his Revolutionary War service, and by his increasing involvement in state politics, including serving as Speaker of the Connecticut House of Representatives.

Aaron Burr's 25-year-long career as a New York politician is often overshadowed by two dramatic scandals; the 1804 duel in which he killed former Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton, and a series of treason charges leveled against him in 1807.
