A. Lincoln CDV with Slavery Abolition Imagery in Iconic $5 Bill Pose by Brady Gallery.
CDV
Carte De Visite, featuring the iconic portrait of Abraham Lincoln, which was the basis for the engraving used on the $5 bill. In February 1864, Abraham Lincoln sat for a photography session with Anthony Berger, who was working at Brady's Photographic Studio when this image was captured. The CDV measures 2.5" x 4." In fine condition with some toning.

The iconic image of Lincoln is surrounded by intricate border art by William Momberger.

Top Left Corner: A scene of agricultural labor, showing individuals working in the fields with tools. This imagery likely represents the industrious spirit of rural America and the importance of agriculture to the nation during Lincoln's presidency, emphasizing the broader economic foundation of the Union.

Top Right Corner: A depiction of emancipation, featuring individuals in celebratory postures. This imagery symbolizes the abolition of slavery, with figures suggesting freedom and unity following the Emancipation Proclamation and the eventual passage of the 13th Amendment.

Bottom Left Corner: A patriotic allegorical figure, possibly Liberty, holding an American flag and surrounded by symbols of Union strength and perseverance.

Bottom Right Corner: A classical figure representing justice, holding scales and embodying the ideals of equality and fairness achieved through Lincoln's leadership.
Center Below: A banner inscribed with "Union," surrounded by laurel branches, emphasizing Lincoln's unwavering dedication to preserving the United States.

John Chester Buttre was an American steel-plate engraver and lithographer, responsible for some 3,000 engraved portraits of American political, naval and military personalities. He published "The American Portrait Gallery" in 3 volumes (1880–81) with text by his daughter, Lillian C. Buttre.
