A. Lincoln 1862 Rare General's Commission, He Helped Thwart Morgan's Raid. Lovely Full Signature!
Partially printed DS

A partial-printed appointment signed "Abraham Lincoln" and countersigned by Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton. 1p, measuring 14.75" x 19.5", Washington, D.C., March 22, 1862. The document nominates "Henry M. Judah… Brigadier General of Volunteers in the service of the United States: to rank as such from the thirty first day of March eighteen hundred and sixty two." Docketing present at upper left corner by the Adjutant General's office, recorded by Lorenzo Thomas (1804-1875). Exhibits scattered soiling around perimeter, with expected age toning and creasing throughout. Isolated ink markings not affecting text above Lincoln's signature, which is not affected by the usual creases found on these. Otherwise, very fine.

Henry Moses Judah (1821-1866) was a career officer in the United States Army, serving during the Mexican-American War, Indian Wars, and American Civil War. He is most remembered for his role in helping thwart Morgan's Raid in 1863, and for leading a disastrous attack during the Battle of Resaca a year later. During the former incursion, Judah was ordered by Major General Ambrose Burnside to pursue Morgan. His forces met the Confederates at the Battle of Buffington Island, but ultimately failed to capture General Morgan, who finally surrendered to other Federal troops on July 26, 1863.
