Description:

Aaron Burr
Bridge Town, 20th, no month or year
A. Burr ALS Sending Instructions to Make a Petition to the NY Court of Chancery
ALS

Aaron Burr autograph letter signed. 2pp with integral address sheet, 7.75" x 13"; Bridge Town, [New Jersey ?]; 20th, no month or year, at 5 PM. A letter to attorney Gurdon W. Lathrop regarding a case they are working on. Signed with initials, "AB." Near complete separation at integral fold, where paper has been added at center. Paper added at lower right corner of both sheets, including a few letters replaced in facsimile. Bold ink.

Burr hastily sends instructions on how to proceed on a case. In part; "It is only to say that in a chancery suit of Brown & Hubble adv Hamerely, I am apprehensive that the time for answering may expire, or that the Chancellor may leave town before my return. Please therefore recommend to John to make a Petition for time to answer the form of which will be found in Harrison – on the first petition for time it is matter of course to give six weeks without any cause shown but as our Chancl may not know this, John must take the book to show him…" He adds, "God protect you from any more of such dangerous assaults at least until I shall return & take that duty on myself."

Although no month or year is given, the letter likely dates from the late 1810s as there are other letters from Burr to Lathrop dating from these years, and all having incomplete dates. Additionally, Lathrop died in 1820. Burr returned from self-imposed exile in Europe after 1812, and resumed his law practice in New York.
