Eisenhower Dwight

Eisenhower's Breakfast Menu from June 1957 During a Visit Aboard the U.S.S. Saratoga

Cream colored stock with gilt embossed presidential seal on front cover, and typed contents within. In near fine condition, measuring 4.5" x 6."

On June 6-7, 1957, 34rd U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower (1890-1969) reviewed U.S. Atlantic Fleet vessels stationed off the east coast of Florida. He was joined by Secretary of State John Foster Dulles, Secretary of the Treasury George M. Humphrey, Secretary of Defense Charles Erwin Wilson, Eisenhower's Press Secretary James C. Hagerty, and military brass. Eisenhower witnessed various air, marine, daytime, and nighttime exercises that demonstrated the technological superiority of American naval defense and offense.

The breakfast menu from Friday, June 7, 1957 offered dignitaries everything from stewed prunes, scrambled eggs, and broiled mackerel to tomato juice, hominy grits, and pork sausage.

The U.S.S. Saratoga was a Forrestal-class supper carrier commissioned just one year before, in 1956. The 60,000 ton vessel could accommodate between 70-90 planes and over 5,500 crew members.  The ship was decommissioned in 1994 after almost forty years' service in Scandinavia, the Mediterranean, the Middle East, and Asia.

Eisenhower's impressions of the naval display are unknown, but the former military commander would have appreciated the logistics behind the demonstrations. The career soldier had managed personnel and resources during both World Wars, most recently as 1st Supreme Allied Commander of Europe.
