Pamphlet/Booklet

Revolutionary War. The Votes and Proceedings of the Freeholders and other Inhabitants of the Town of Boston, In Town Meeting assembled, According to Law. Boston: Edes and Gill, [1772]. 43pp, 4.75" x 7.25". Later bound in light brown half calf and marbled covers with gilt titling at spine. Ex libris at front pastedown and red oval library stamp at title page. Interior with expected age toning, foxing, and isolated ink splatter. Minor worming to several pages. A few scattered pencil and ink notations. Boards show scuffing and edge wear. Front hinge split; back hinge cracking. In very good condition.

The pamphlet begins with the minutes of the October 28, 1772 freeholders meeting appointing a Committee of Correspondence. Next, are the long proceedings of November 20, where John Hancock was chosen moderator as the Committee of Correspondence reported on "Natural Rights of the Colonists" as men, colonists and Christians; followed by "A List of Infringements and Violations of Rights;" and concluding with a "Letter of Correspondence, to the other Towns" which spreads the word of "the Plan of Despotism, which the Enemies of our invaluable Rights have concerted;" and an Appendix, which shares the correspondence between the Committee and Governor Hutchinson.

This copy was deaccessioned in 1965 from the John Carter Brown Library, on the Brown University campus in Providence, Rhode Island. The ex libris has an inked release stamp and the librarian's initials, "TRA," for Thomas Randolph Adams (1921-2008). Adams was librarian of the John Carter Brown Library, John Hay Professor of Bibliography, and University Bibliographer. He wrote superb bibliographical descriptions of this pamphlet, along with several other published works.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
