9/11 and Aftermath From the Eyes of a NJ Police Officer, Powerful Photo Archive!
Photographs

Collection of 19 deeply poignant original color Konica photos taken by New Jersey police officer, EMT, and volunteer firefighter Michael J. Coppola, who responded to the World Trade Center during and immediately following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City. Printed on Konica paper, each photograph captures the raw and harrowing moments of the aftermath, rubble-strewn streets, collapsed buildings, FDNY and NYPD personnel in action, and smoke engulfing lower Manhattan. The photos depict never before seen firsthand ground-level views from Ground Zero, showing search and rescue efforts, destroyed vehicles, emergency response operations, and scenes of destruction. The photographs measure 4" x 6" and are housed in the original photo album. Photographer's sticker on verso of all examples "Coppola: 9-11-01 C," else fine. The book measures 6.75" x 5.25".

The photographer was a New Jersey police officer, EMT, and volunteer firefighter who responded to the World Trade Center as a member of Metro Fire Radio, a private organization that provides volunteer emergency communications during disasters and public emergencies. He later recounted his experience in a firsthand article titled "I Heard the Snap of the Tower," published on Policemag.com on October 31, 2001.

Rushing in from New Jersey alongside the Jersey City Fire Department, he arrived at the scene shortly before the towers collapsed. "We began taking photos," he recalled. "Our original purpose was to document the operation, knowing how many people were working there. Then we heard the sound. Tower One began to crack at the seams from the heat of the jet fuel fire. Then came the snap—the final breaking point. There was no time to think, only to run. We couldn't even take photographs. We were running for our lives."

After the immediate area was stabilized, he returned to what he described as the "war zone" to reassess conditions. "We updated Metro as soon as we could and went right back to work—putting out even more fires and dodging exploding cars. We photographed what we could, when we could. On that day, I saw heroes in action, and they were all around me."
