The Jewish Colonial Trust was the first Zionist bank, founded in 1899. It was created with the express intention to be the financial instrument of the Zionist Organization and to obtain the capital and credit necessary to gain a charter for Palestine. The founders included Jewish notables, including Dr. Theodor Herzl and David Wolffsohn, who served as the first and second presidents of the World Zionist Organization. Ordinary shares were £1 each and were generally issued in very small share amounts. The Ordinary Shares also originally had coupons attached at the bottom of the certificates, but this was later changed to a separate sheet. The Trust eventually discontinued its banking business in 1934.
