Rare! Signed " G A Custer" – Incorporating " Genl G A Custer" addressing an envelope, General George Armstrong Custer writes to his wife at Fort Leavenworth

GEORGE ARMSTRONG CUSTER (1839-1876) Envelope addressed by Custer to his wife incorporating his complete official signature " Mrs Genl G.A. Custer / Fort Leavenworth / Kansas" and the date " Feb 13th 1869," 9.25" x 4.5". Three 3¢ George Washington postage stamps partially postmarked HAYS KA. Fine condition.

Custer rarely wrote letters to his wife incorporating his full official " G A Custer" signature in the address.

" Custer first came to Kansas in 1866 as Lieutenant Colonel of the newly formed. He spent late spring of 1867 at Fort Hays, where the Seventh camped until they had accumulated adequate supplies and ammunition for a summer campaign...The 7th Cavalry was charged with rounding up American Indians opposed to the U.S. government's plan to relocate them onto reservations. Custer stayed at Fort Hays periodically until the 7th was reassigned out of the state in 1871." --- Kansas Historical Society

The Custers were stationed at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, during the winters. Mrs. Custer was the only officer's wife who always followed the regiment.
