Description:

7 Photos from John F. Kennedy's Last Birthday

A group of seven photographs taken during a surprise birthday party thrown by members of the White House staff for John F. Kennedy's birthday. Varying sizes, the largest being 10" x 8" and the smallest being 7" x 5", Washington, D.C., dated May 29, 1963. Five of the seven images are in black and white, with the two color photographs bearing the stamp of Cecil Stoughton on verso. All of the images show the president opening presents with First Lady Jackie Kennedy seated or standing next to him. Press secretary Pierre Salinger can be seen holding up a plaque reading, "Complaints Ignored / Henry Luce."  Presidential aide Dave Powers is also in numerous photographs, standing at right wearing glasses. The images are slightly curled with bumping to the corners. One image has been mounted to thicker cardstock. Light wear and edge soiling. Overall very good.

May 29, 1963, was President Kennedy’s forty-sixth birthday and the last birthday he would celebrate before his assassination. At the end of the workday, Kennedy walked down to the Navy Mess, where a small group of his staff and Mrs. Kennedy were waiting with a cake and an array of gag gifts, including a miniature rocking chair, boxing gloves to deal with Congress, and various prank signs. There was a “Debate Rules” sign allegedly from Richard Nixon in the mix. Later that evening, the president boarded the USS Sequoia for a more intimate celebration planned by Mrs. Kennedy. The guest list of only twenty-four included family members and his closest friends.
