Description:

60+ First World War Images Gallipoli, Dardanelles, Baghdad, etc!

Over 60 images, consisting of an album of small photographs and cabinet cards, of scenes, movements, and proceedings during the First World War. Dating from 1914-1917. Much of the focus appears to be on the events following the disastrous Gallipoli campaign, as well as the invasion of and fighting around Baghdad and Jerusalem. Unfortunately, the album of 25 photos has no identifier as to its owner other than the initials "G.G.A." embossed in gilt on the front cover. The larger cabinet cards (21) were taken by Edward Cox, Clock Tower Studios, Margate. Cox had been appointed the official photographer of the 1916 Dardanelles Commission. The smaller cabinet cards (15) relate to British movements around Baghdad and Jerusalem in 1917. All with light wear, toning, soiling, and silvering. Please refer to the photographs for further condition information. Overall, very good. Fantastic for any First World War enthusiast!

Highlights include:
Large Album of 25 photographs: 1914 Sandhurst soldiers training, on parade, digging. Groups of men and women swimming and playing tennis. HMS "Arannia" in 1915, the French cruiser "Jules Michelet" in Malta, USS "Tennessee" in Alexandria in 1915, a dugout in Gallipoli, a hospital ship, and many more.

21 Large Cabinet Cards Taken by Edward Cox, ca. 1916: Anzac Cove, Lancashire Landing, Kilia Bahr. British and Turkish graves at Gallipoli, an anti-aircraft gun, several dummy battleships, Greek soldiers outside the Smyrna War Office, a poisoned well at Gallipoli, etc.

15 Small Cabinet Cards, ca. 1917: Entry of British troops into Baghdad, Aerial view of Jerusalem, a Dardanelles fort, Indian Lancers entering Haifa, British cavalry crossing the Hasasu near Kirkot, etc.

The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, commonly known simply as Sandhurst, is one of several military academies of the United Kingdom and is the British Army's initial officer training facility. After the disastrous 1915 Dardanelles Campaign, which took place on the Gallipoli peninsula, a special commission was formed to investigate what went wrong. Edward Cox had been the official photographer for the Commission to investigate these failures. The final report, issued in 1919, found major problems with the planning and execution of the entire campaign.
