A wonderful collection of six book and exhibition promotional posters celebrating beloved children's book illustrator Maurice Sendak (1928-2012). Five of the six posters are signed, and one of the signed examples also features a presentation inscription. The sixth one, "Dybbuk and Other Tales of the Supernatural" is unsigned. Ca. 1981-1997. The offset lithographs in color are printed on various types of paper, including glossy and matte, single-weight and thick. One poster is in German, one is in Japanese, and the remainder are in English. Expected wear including scattered wrinkles and scuffs. Please refer to catalog photos for additional information related to condition, which is overall very good. The posters range in size from 11.75" x 18.5" at the smallest, to 21.25" x 28.875" at the largest. Ex. From the Collection of Justin Schiller.

The lot includes, in roughly chronological order:

1. A German-language poster headlined "Diogenes Kinderbücher" [trans: "Diogene's Children's Books"], signed, inscribed, and dated by Sendak near the bottom edge as: "For Andrew - mit liebe - Maurice Sendak / April, '81." Ca. 1981. The central image shows "Mr. Rabbit and the Lovely Present" (1962) book characters. A few light wrinkles. Mounting tabs verso. 11.75" x 18.5."

2. An exhibition poster headlined "… And Peace Attend Thee… A Communion of Images by Artists of Books for Children," signed by Sendak as "Maurice Sendak" at lower right. Ca. 1984. The central image depicts "Mr. Rabbit and the Lovely Present" characters. Isolated wrinkling and paper rippling. Pencil-inscribed with mounting tabs verso. 20 x 26.75."

3. A poster headlined "The Horn Book Magazine, About Books for Children and Young Adults," signed by Sendak as "Maurice Sendak" at lower right. Ca. 1985. The central image depicts a bevy of Sendakian characters including monsters from "Where The Wild Things Are." Nice and crisp. 16.375" x 24."

4. A poster headlined "The Big Book for Peace, A Special Volume For and About the Issues of Our Times," signed by Sendak as "Maurice Sendak" at lower left. Ca. 1990. The central image depicts a horned monster from "Where The Wild Things Are" with a bird's nest on his head. Isolated scuffs and corner wrinkles, with minor foxing on the reverse. 18.125" x 24."

5. A "Sendak in Asia" Japanese-language exhibition poster, signed by Sendak as "Maurice Sendak" at lower left. The central image depicts Sendakian characters and a self-portrait. Scattered minor to moderate wrinkles to the corners and edges. Ca. 1993-1996.

6. A poster headlined "A Dybbuk and Other Tales of the Supernatural" advertising pictures by Maurice Sendak. Unsigned. Ca. 1997. The central image depicts a woman bursting out of an open grave in a Jewish cemetery. Negligible corner wrinkling. 12.5" x 9."

Maurice Sendak was an award-winning children's book illustrator and author. Always interested in design, Sendak began his career by illustrating comic books and designing toy company shop windows. After writing and illustrating a series of incredibly popular children's books, Sendak also created, wrote, and produced animated children's television programs.

Unless otherwise indicated, we do our own in-house world-wide shipping!

Applicable shipping and handling charges will be added to the invoice. We offer several shipping options, and remain one of the few auction houses that proudly provides professional in-house shipping as an option to our clients. All items will ship with a signature required option, and full insurance. Most items are sent via Federal Express, with P. O. Box addresses being sent through USPS. We insure through Berkley Asset Protection with rates of $.70 per $100 of value, among the lowest insurance rates in the industry. Our shipping department cameras document every package, both outgoing and incoming, for maximum security. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.

Upon winning your item(s), you will receive an invoice with our in-house shipping and handling fees included. ***We will ship to the address as it appears on your invoice. If any changes to the shipping address need to be made, you must inform us immediately.***

International shipments: In order to comply with our insurance provider, all international shipments will be sent via Fed Ex and customs paperwork will show a value of $1.00. International buyers should contact our office directly with any questions regarding this policy.

Third-Party Shipping Option: If a third-party shipper is preferred, the buyer is responsible for contacting them directly to make shipping arrangements. For your convenience, we have provided some recommended shippers. For your protection, we will require a signed release from you, confirming your authorization for us to release your lots to your specified third-party. At that point, our responsibility and insurance coverage for your item(s) ceases. Items picked up by third-party shippers are required to pay Connecticut sales tax. Items requiring third-party shipping due to being oversized, fragile or bulky will be denoted in the item description.
