Description:

52,000 Cuban "Segars" Imported into Philadelphia in 1831

A partly printed and partly handwritten customs collection document signed by Philadelphia merchant and acting customs collector Charles Nicholas Buck (1775-1851) as "C.N. Buck" near center right verso. The "Entry of Merchandise" form lists "Three Cases Contg fifty two thousand Segars" delivered by the Brig "Columbian," John S. Remington, master, from Havana, Cuba on June 21, 1831. The back of the document includes the collector's pledge that he honestly and faithfully reported the goods. Light, even toning and a few chips along the top edge. Expected paper folds, else near fine. 15.75" x 10.125."

European and American markets eagerly consumed Cuban cigars during this time. Between 1831-1835, it's estimated that Cuba exported approximately 99 million cigars annually. The authentic Cuban cigar was, as it still is today, highly preferred to domestic imitations. For example, in 1831, a cigar rolled stateside, incorporating homegrown tobacco and a little Cuban tobacco, could be purchased for less than a penny ($1 for 1000 cigars). Real Cuban cigars sold for more than twice that.

Charles Nicholas Buck had served as U.S. Consul General of the Free City of Hamburg in the late 1810s and early 1820s, during the tenure of John Quincy Adams as U.S. Secretary of State. A merchant, Buck later served as President of Columbia Insurance Company.

Historical records indicate that John S. Remington, who captained the Brig "Columbian," also carried passengers in addition to goods; the Immigrant Ships Transcribers Guild lists several journeys to and from Europe, the Caribbean, and Philadelphia around this period.
