(5) Rare Portrait Photographs of Confederate Generals by Sterling McIntyre: Cooper, Ewell, Loring, Price, Smith
Photographs

A collection of handsome portrait photographs of lesser known but no less important Confederate generals, including Samuel Cooper, Richard S. Ewell, William W. Loring, Sterling Price, and Edmund Kirby Smith, all copyrighted by Sterling McIntyre. Ca. 1861? Richmond, Virginia? The oval albumen photographs (6.125" x 8") show discrete isolated retouching, and are seamlessly affixed to stock card mounts of various sizes, with the subject's name printed at the base featuring a fancy drop shadow. "Published by S.C. McIntyre" is printed on the left of each oval, and "Copy right secured" is printed on the right of the oval. Each mount is also hand-stamped "Phot. Microscopique / Montée sur Bijoux / Dagron & Cie. / Brevetés / 66 R. Neuve des Petits-Champs. Paris" verso. The generals were photographed in a variety of dress including uniforms and civilian clothes. Expected wear commensurate with age and wear including toning. Isolated scuffs, foxing, or chipped edges. Some printed or stamped markings are faded or slightly smeared. Please refer to catalog photos for additional information related to condition. Else near fine. The largest photograph mount in this collection is 9.25" x 12.5." Comes with a sizable amount of research about Sterling McIntyre assembled by a former collector, including census records, newspaper clippings, and scholarly articles.

The portrait publisher, Scottish-born photographer and daguerreotype specialist Sterling McIntyre (ca. 1816-?), trained in Paris as a dentist before immigrating to the United States in 1840. He worked his way throughout the South and the West (Florida, South Carolina, Alabama, California) and developed significant skill in early photography. In addition to this series of Confederate officer portrait photographs, likely intended for consumption in Civil War-era British or French markets, McIntyre is also known for his panoramic and Western photography. In Dr. Donald A. Hopkins's authoritative study of the photography of Robert E. Lee, "Robert E. Lee in War and Peace: The Photographic History of a Confederate and American Icon" (El Dorado Hills, California: Savis Beatie Publishing, 2013), Hopkins says that McIntyre photographs are "scarce," and that, "McIntyre's notation of 'copyright secured' on his altered photograph of General Lee was quite unique in the early days of the Confederacy…"

The backstamp of each mount refers to the company of René Patrice Proudhon Dagron (1819-1900), a French portrait photographer active in Paris in the 1860s. Dagron pioneered the use of microphotography.

The subjects include, in alphabetical order:

- Samuel Cooper (1798-1876), "Genl. S. Cooper. C.S.A." showing the general in a black frock coat and cravat striking a Napoleonic pose. Cooper outranked even Robert E. Lee and was the highest ranking general officer of the Confederate Army. Mount: 9.25" x 12.5."

- Richard S. Ewell (1817-1872), "Genl. R.S. Ewell. C.S.A." depicting the general in a double-breasted Confederate uniform. Ewell was a competent subordinate of both Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson. Mount: 8.5" x 11.375."

- William Loring (1818-1886), "Genl. Wm. Loring. C.S.A." showing the one-armed general in his double-breasted Confederate uniform holding a sword in his lap. Over the course of his impressive and lengthy military career, Loring would serve in the United States Army, Confederate Army, and the Egyptian Army. Mount: 8.25" x 12.5."

- Sterling Price (1809-1867), "Genl. Sterling Price. C.S.A." depicting the general in a double-breasted Confederate uniform, dignified by a Napoleonic pose. Price saw action in the Western and Trans-Mississippi Theatres. Mount: 9.25" x 12.375."

- Edmund Kirby Smith (1824-1893), "Genl. Kirby Smith. C.S.A." showing the general in a double-breasted Confederate uniform. Smith was active in the Trans-Mississippi Department, and holds the distinction of being the last Confederate general to ever surrender, in Texas on July 2, 1865. Mount: 8.75" x 12."
