Description:

4 Eddie Rickenbacker TLS & 2 Speech Pamphlets "I visualize a land of greater abundance and opportunity"

A collection of four typed Christmas letters signed by Eddie Rickenbacker, with two additional pamphlets having printed addresses by Rickenbacker. The letters all measure 7.25" x 10.5", Hunt, Kerr County, Texas, dated 1953 to 1956. All are signed "Eddie" and are addressed to Cory Adams of the New York World-Telegram and Sun. The letters all have flattened folds, light wear and minor soiling but are boldly signed. Minor wear and uneven toning to the pamphlets. Overall, very good. Please view the photographs for further condition information.

In his letters, Rickenbacker shares his views on progress, leadership, peacetime, and more. The two pamphlets are addresses Rickenbacker made at The Economic Club of Chicago in 1961 and the Union League Club in 1962. Entitled "Conservatism Must Face Up to Liberalism" and "A Hundred Years Have Passed" respectively.

Highlights from each letter:

Christmas, 1953: "…As I dream of the future, I visualize a land of greater abundance and opportunity, guided by a political, industrial, financial, social and spiritual leadership that will maintain and improve our dynamic power in ever line of endeavor…"

Christmas, 1954: "…Certainly we must recognize that the cost of these conflicts to the American taxpayer has been great, and will continue to be great, as the years roll on but this is the lesser of the two evils, in so far as the difference between the 'hot' and 'cold' wars is concerned. Then, as people get tired of the 'cold' war, and surely they must with time, great progress for all the peoples of the world lies ahead in a more peaceful atmosphere. We have seen tax reductions granted to all segments of our people here at home through the farsightedness and courage of our present leadership, which has contributed greatly to an unprecedented peacetime prosperity…"

Christmas, 1955: "…In 1955 we enjoyed a year of unprecedented prosperity, reflecting the magnitude of those blessings, and the confidence our country's leadership has inspired. The penalty for leadership, which often demands its pound of flesh, struck our eminent President [Eisenhower], that shocked not only the citizens of our great country, but millions of people in all parts of the free world. That a gracious God spared him is a blessing which overshadows all others. It is our fervent prayer that he may recover completely, and that we may be blessed with his dynamic leadership for many years to come…"

Christmas, 1956: "Now that the shouting of our national election is behind us with all of the incriminations, headlines, radio flashes, television speeches et cetera, I had hoped we would be able to settle down to a more peaceful and constructive period. Fortunately, for all Americans and the freedom-loving peoples of the world, President Eisenhower was re-elected by an overwhelming plurality…Unfortunately, my dream of a period of peace and constructive effort on the part of the American people and our government was rudely and unexpectedly shattered a few days before the final returns were known. Israel, as well as Britain and France, went to war with Egypt. Russia went to war with her satellites - Poland and the helpless little country of Hungary…"
