3 Important U.S. History Relics: Sandstone & Flag from U.S. Capitol, Wood from Independence Hall
Relics
A wonderful dealer's lot of three artifacts salvaged from the U.S. Capitol and Independence Hall, including a sandstone disc from the U.S. Capitol, 1793-1960; an authentic wood chip from an original beam at Philadelphia's Independence Hall, ca. 1732-1753; and a U.S. Capitol-flown American flag, ca. January 1988. Two of the three items come with accompanying certificates of authenticity. The largest item, the flag, is stored in a box measuring 12.5" x 9.625" x 1.625."

The lot includes:

1. A polished sandstone disc or paperweight, beige with light brown striations, bearing a brass-finished label reading: "Original Sandstone / from the U.S. Capitol / 1793-1960" at the center. Felt pads adhered to the underside. 2.875" diameter x 1" high. Sandstone architectural elements at the U.S. Capitol have been replaced over time by more durable materials, such as limestone and marble.

2. An oblong wood chip engraved "3126," mounted at the center of a gilt-embossed blue leather clamshell display case, bearing an engraved plaque reading: "Authentic Wood Chip / From Original Beam / Independence Hall, / Philadelphia." The actual size of the wood chip is approximately 1.125" x .625" while the display case measures 5.125" x 6" x 1.125." The cardboard box housing the relic and display, lightly scuffed, measures 7" x 9.25" x 1.325." Accompanied by a rolled Certificate of Authenticity from Burnes of Boston confirming that the wood chip numbered 3126 is an authentic relic from Independence Hall.

3. A U.S. flag, Defiance 100% cotton bunting with embroidered stars, measuring 3' x 5' overall, the left edge fitted with two brass grommets. Scattered minor loose threads, else near fine. The flag is housed in an official labeled cardboard box inscribed "Natcher," some corner damage, measuring 12.5" x 9.625" x 1.625." Accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity issued by George M. White, Architect of the Capitol, stating in part that "the accompanying flag was flown over the United States Capitol on January 23, 1988, at the request of the Honorable William H. Natcher, Member of Congress. This flag was flown for Kentucky Chapter No. 134, National Sojourners, Inc."

William H. Natcher (1909-1994) was a Democratic Congressman representing Kentucky's 2nd district for over four decades. The National Sojourners is a fraternal patriotic organization affiliated with the Freemasons.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
