3 Handsome Prints of Abraham Lincoln, 19th/20th C.
Prints
A group of handsome prints from the 19th/20th C., all depicting 16th U.S. President Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865), including an engraving after A.B. Walter; an engraving after J.C. Buttre and W. Momberger; and a lithographic print after S.T. Woolf. All of the prints are framed behind glass in period frames; they have not been examined out of the frames. The smallest framed print measures 7.75" x 10.125" x .75" while the largest framed piece measures 21" x 17" x .875."

The lot includes:

1. An oval-shaped engraving after Adam B. Walter (1820-1875), "President Lincoln at Home" (publisher J. Dainty, 17 So. 6th St. Philadelphia, n.d. but ca. 1860). The engraving, after a Mathew B. Brady photograph, shows a seated Lincoln leafing through a large book while son Tad Lincoln (1853-1871) looks over his shoulder. Expected condition issues to the paper including scattered minor foxing and stains. A wrinkle touches Tad's forehead, else very good. Framed in a mahogany veneer period frame with isolated surface loss, 7.75" x 10.125" x .75."

2. An oval-shaped engraving after John Chester Buttre (1821-1893), "Abraham Lincoln. President of the United States. Assassinated April 14, 1865" (publisher J.C. Buttre, 48 Franklin St., New York, ca. 1865). The central oval-shaped portrait of Lincoln was based on an original photograph associated with Mathew Brady, and engraved by Buttre in 1864. William Momberger designed and executed the border, which depicts (from clockwise): a group of emancipated slaves; an allegorical representation of Peace; a warlike figure slaying the multi-headed dragon of Rebellion; and a group of figures near a wagon, possibly depicting a returning soldier. The title, artist, and copyright information appear above and below Lincoln's facsimile signature at bottom. Even toning and isolated foxing, else near fine. Housed in a gilded hardwood frame with a dew dents and dings, else very good. Overall framed size: 14.25" x 19.625" x 1.5."

3. A lithographic print after Samuel Johnson Woolf (1880-1948), pencil-signed by the artist as "S.J. Woolf" outside the image field at lower right. N.d. but ca. 1925-1945, presenting a modern, more relaxed depiction of Lincoln. Light scattered foxing and a few stains near the left edge well outside the image, else near fine. Framed in a period oak frame measuring 21" x 17" x .875."
