Description:

(3) Diverse Lincoln CDV Group- Political Cartoons and Full Color Example

A group of 3 cartes de visite, all measuring 2.5" x 4", depicting Abraham Lincoln. Includes (2) anti-Lincoln political cartoons and one domestic family scene. Light surface toning and minor scratching in places, overall very fine.

The lot includes:

1.) "The Rail-Splitter" political cartoon published by Mathew Brady, ca. 1860s. Shows Lincoln preparing to split the Union and its border states with a "fanatical" hammer, represented by a wooden log, with other logs in the background labeled as "Too Tough to Split", among them New York, New Jersey, and Ohio. Brady backstamp found on verso. During the 1860 presidential campaign, Lincoln would become known as the "Rail Splitter" in addition to "Honest Abe", which made reference to his humble beginnings as a farmer in order to better appeal to working-class Americans.

2.) "I Wish I was in Dixie" anti-abolitionist cartoon, ca. 1863. The image depicts Lincoln as an archetypal Southerner playing a banjo, with a copy of the Emancipation Proclamation in his back pocket. The title is in reference to the president's favorite song of the same name, which he had played during some political rallies and at the announcement of General Robert E. Lee's surrender.

3.) "Lincoln and Family" full-color example, ca. 1865. An iconic depiction of Lincoln reading a book, surrounded by first lady Mary Todd Lincoln and sons Robert and Tad.
