The National Space Institute was established by Wernher von Braun in 1974 as the National Space Association; in 1975, “Association” was replaced with ”Institute.” In 1987, it merged with the L5 Society to become the National Space Society. In 1975, Dr. Von Braun, NSI’s first President, explained, “The main role of the National Space Institute will be that of a catalyst between the space techonologist and the user. It will attempt to bring to the attention of people the new opportunities offered by advances made in space experiments and space techniques. It will study the feasibility of the application, and the potential uses of space technology as it relates to other human activities.”

Mercury astronaut ALAN SHEPARD (1923-1998) and later U.S. Senator HARRISON H. SCHMITT walked on the Moon. Mercury astronaut DONALD K. SLAYTON (1924-1993) commanded Apollo Soyuz Test Project. Astronaut JERRY CARR flew on Skylab. Balloonist JEANNETTE PICCARD (1895-1981) was the first licensed female balloon pilot in the United States and the first woman to fly to the stratosphere. Novelist JAMES A. MICHENER (1907-1997) won the 1948 Pulitzer Prize in Fiction for “Tales of the South Pacific.” Also signing are radio broadcaster and world traveler LOWELL THOMAS (1892-1981), TV broadcaster and host and N.S.I. President HUGH DOWNS, N.S.I. Executive Director CHARLES C. HEWITT, rocket pioneer Wernher von Braun’s widow MARIA VON BRAUN, NASA Administrators JAMES C. FLETCHER and ROBERT A. FROSCH, later NASA Chief of Staff COURTNEY STADD, U.S. Senators FRANK E. MOSS and ADLAI STEVENSON III, U.S. Congressmen RONNIE G. FLIPPO and DON FUQUE, Apollo Program Manager ROCCO A. PETRONE, Rockwell International’s CHARLES L. GOULD, U.S. Secretary of the Air Force and NASA Deputy Director HANS MARK, TV broadcaster JAMES “JIM” HARTZ, and Curator of Astronautics at the National air & Space Museum JAMES DURANT.
