Description:

20th C. Soviet Propaganda Posters Decrying U.S. Racism & Capitalism, 3 Pcs

A small group of Soviet-era propaganda posters vilifying the United States, its ideological enemy, by targeting American racism and American capitalism. No copyright or publishing information. The three posters with Russian-language captions are black and white; one has additional red accents. Each poster has a central fold, and additional wear includes scattered wrinkles, closed tears, and gently folded edges or corners. Else very good to near fine. The overall size of the posters is 11" x 16.75" unfolded; folded, they measure approximately 11" x 8.25."

The posters are quite striking visually, testifying to the artistic skill, ideological appeal, and graphic potency of Soviet-era state-sponsored propaganda artists. The posters include, with their translated titles:

1. "Lawful Unlawfulness"

The poster depicts a Black man encircled by a noose in the shape of a dollar sign. The symbols--the wooden stakes and the noose--allude to the incarceration and lynching of African Americans.

2. "Racism"

The poster shows a Black man being mauled by a dog (with dollar sign collar) in front of a barbed wire barrier spelling out the word "Racism."

3. "Rights of Man, Racial Style"

The poster depicts a Black man being whipped by a dollar-sign-shaped cord. The imagery of the partly denuded man, and the overseer's whip, alludes to the history of the institution of American slavery.

These propaganda posters succeeded in delineating some of the greatest ideological, cultural, political, and economic differences between the Soviet Union and the United States. The Soviet Union was, officially at least, an international-minded, color-blind, and gender-equal Socialist society. One of the most common themes of anti-American Soviet-era propaganda posters was racism against African Americans, with the act of lynching being the most frequently portrayed. "And you are lynching Negroes" was a common rejoinder that the Soviet Union lobbed against the United States, often leveled in response to American criticisms of Soviet civil rights abuses.
