Description:

20th C. Native American Autographs, 4 Pcs Incl. Chief White Eagle Craig, Lecture Circuit "Indian Orator"

An intriguing collection of early-twentieth-century Native American autographs, ca. 1930s. The lot consists of a signed photograph, a signed postcard, a signed business card, and a signed calling card. Expected wear commensurate with age, else near fine. The largest item measures 5" x 7."

The lot is comprised of:

1. A vintage gelatin silver photograph depicting "Chief White Eagle Craig / Great High Priest" affiliated with the American Indian Wig-Wam, Inc. organization, presumably signed by him verso as "Chief White Eagle." Chief White Eagle's name has been inscribed in the negative above the image of an embossed seal also containing his name and affiliations. He is dressed in traditional regalia and wears a ribbon on his lapel reading "Kiowa Tribe…Kansas City." Isolated gentle wrinkles and a few areas of minor silvering, else near fine. 5" x 7."

Chief White Eagle Craig was styled as a "widely known Indian orator from the Southwest" in a newspaper article with companion photo as seen in "The Ridgewood Herald" (Ridgewood, New Jersey) dated December 19, 1930. Chief White Eagle Craig had been delivering lectures relating to American Indian history and culture since ca. 1895, and was further described as "a most interesting lecturer on the life of the Aboriginal American."

2. A calling card signed by Running Bear as "Running Bear" at center, accompanied by its original transmittal envelope inscribed "Nov. 18, 1934."

3. A business card advertising Elliott Motor Car Corp. (Amityville, Long Island) inscribed and signed by Chief White Feather as "To Rose-Marie / from / Chief White Feather, / 5-12-35" verso. Closed tears are repaired recto. 3.5" x 2.125."

Could this be the same Chief White Feather who served as a Hollywood character actor in the 1930s? Chief White Feather played an Iroquois Indian in "Fighting Caravans" (1931), and as an uncredited renegade in "Custer's Last Stand" (1936). More research is definitely needed!

4. A vintage color postcard signed by Chief Silver Tongue as "Chief Silver Tongue" across the back. The postcard front depicts the Owens-Illinois Glass Block Building of Toledo, Ohio. 5.5" x 3.5." Expected wear including slightly blunted corners, else near fine.
