A Boston Athenaeum press release entitled "Hopes and Dreams: The Lewis and Clark Map," explains that the original manuscript map of the Lewis & Clark Expedition can be found in the collection of the Boston Athenaeum. It was drawn by War Department cartographer Nicholas King using "route maps of William Clark, the observations of Meriwether Lewis, and the testimony of Indian informants." The original map shows the expanse of the United States from the Great Lakes to the Pacific Ocean, delineating major waterways such as the Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, Columbia, Colorado, Platt, Osage, Wabash, "Kanzas," and "Arkansaw" Rivers. The original map also demarcated where indigenous tribes, like the Blackfoot, lived.

President Thomas Jefferson tasked Lewis & Clark with exploring the western territory of the United States after it had been significantly expanded through the 1803 Louisiana Purchase. The explorers' mission was not only to record accurate information about the topography, waterways, and other natural features of the new country, but also to facilitate extending federal sovereignty over Indian groups.
