After serving in the U.S. Navy's photography unit during World War II, Rickerby was recruited to join ACME/UPI in the mid-1940s. During this time he covered the post-war developments in China, Japan, and Germany, among other projects. Later in 1961, Rickerby was hired by LIFE Magazine to cover the Kennedy administration. On the day of Kennedy's assassination, he rode in the President's motorcade and notably captured the sobering image of Lady Bird Johnson's abandoned bouquet of roses in the open limousine.
