Dred Scott
various, ca. 1846-1872
20 Bound Pamphlets (1846-1872) incl. 1st Ed. Printing of Dred Scott Decision, Plus Lincoln-Douglas Debates, Ku Klux Klan Trial & More
Pamphlet/Booklet

A bound collection of twenty 19th century pamphlets and speeches remarking on topics of slavery, politics, and foreign affairs. Various places, ranging in publication date from 1846 to 1872. Octavo, 5.5" x 8.5" x 2.5". 990pp [plus 1p manuscript index]. Of particular note is a first edition printing of the Dred Scott decision, published 1857. Additional contents include an early 1860 reprint of the Lincoln-Douglas debates, a report on the assassination of Abraham Lincoln from the 39th Congress, the 1858 southern platform on the abolition of slavery, Daniel Corbin's argument in the 1872 Ku Klux Klan trial, and many more. Features hand-pagination from the previous owner throughout, with ownership signature present on front pastedown. Contemporaneous marble boards with leather corners and spine. Front cover has been detached from hinge, but remains connected to binding. Heavy to moderate rubbing and shelf wear. Interior shows expected toning and intermittent soiling, with areas of scattered foxing throughout. Overall, very good.

Accompanied by a partial-printed receipt dated October 30, 1943 for the Lincoln-Douglas Debates, priced at $10.

The Dred Scott report details the Supreme Court's 1857 ruling in the case, which profoundly impacted the nation's understanding of citizenship, slavery, and the Constitution. The report presents the Court's decision, as well as the dissenting and majority opinions of the justices. In the landmark decision, the Court held that the Constitution did not extend the rights of citizenship to those of black African descent, and declared the Missouri Compromise of 1820 as unconstitutional. The disastrous decision dramatically inflamed tensions leading to the Civil War; Charles Evans Hughes, a future chief justice, called the Dred Scott decision the Court's "greatest self-inflicted wound."
