2 Lyndon B. Johnson TLSs, As Senator Re: Yellow Rose of Texas & As Vice President-Elect
TLSs
A brace of typed letters signed by Lyndon B. Johnson (1908-1973), both predating his presidency. The first is dated August 28, 1957, when Johnson was still a U.S. Senator from Texas; and the second is dated December 23, 1960, from then President-Elect Johnson. Both letters are accompanied by their original transmittal envelopes. Condition issues will be elaborated below; overall very good to near fine. The larger of the two letters measures 7.125" x 10.5."

Johnson wrote both letters to Dorothye G. Scott (ca. 1921-2006), who served as the longtime administrative assistant to the Secretary of the U.S. Senate. Scott first served in this role during the secretaryship of Felton "Skeeter" Johnston, who served as Secretary of the Senate from 1955-1965. The Mississippi-born Johnston and the Texas-born LBJ were extremely friendly.

The lot is comprised of:

1. A 1p typed letter signed by Johnson as "Lyndon B Johnson." August 28, 1957. [Washington, D.C.] On watermarked stationery with letterhead embossed "Lyndon B. Johnson / Senate Democratic Leader." With flattened transmittal folds and isolated edge darkening/toning. 7.125" x 10.5." Accompanied by a matching envelope with "Lyndon B. Johnson" return address label, neatly letter-opened, with uneven toning recto.

In part: "One of the nicest things that happened to me on my birthday [Johnson had turned 49 years old on August 27, 1957] was late yesterday afternoon when I received that 'Yellow Rose of Texas' from you to wear in my lapel. I felt mighty debonair all during the evening with my yellow rose…"

2. A 1p typed letter signed by Johnson as "Lyndon B Johnson." December 23, 1960. [Washington, D.C.] On watermarked stationery with "United States Senate / Office of the Democratic Leader / Washington, D.C." letterhead. With a flattened horizontal transmittal fold and isolated tiny corner folds. 6" x 7." Accompanied by a matching envelope with printed Johnson free frank, postmark, and cancelled stamp; unevenly toned.

About six weeks after the 1960 presidential election, Johnson thanked Dorothye for her congratulations, adding: "I hope and pray that I can always merit your trust and justify the confidence you have expressed…"
