n.p., n.d.
1st Ed. "The Blazing Horizon" - Dual Signatures By Gordon W. "Pawnee Bill" Lillie!
Signed book
A first edition hardcover presentation copy of Gordon W. "Pawnee Bill" Lillie (1860-1942), "The Blazing Horizon: The True Story of Pawnee Bill and the Oklahoma Boomers" (Chicago: The White House Publishers, 1929), boldly signed by him with dual signatures, first using his real name as "G.W. Lillie"; and second using his stage name as "'Pawnee Bill.'" N.d., n.p. Pawnee Bill's full inscription appears as: "To Miss Ralda Isaacs / From G.W. Lillie / 'Pawnee Bill'" on the half title page below a hand-stamp reading: "From / Pawnee Bill's Old Town / and Indian Trading Post / 2 Miles West of / Pawnee, Oklahoma / On U.S. Highway 64." (Lillie served as president of the Highway 64 Association.) In its original cherry-colored publisher's buckram with black lettering. Missing its dust jacket, but accompanied by a detached dust jacket flap, assumed original, providing a colorful synopsis of the book. The volume shows expected wear including mostly even toning (with some isolated hot spots), isolated abrasions to one of the front loose endpapers, and a minor ghost ink impression facing Pawnee Bill's inscription. Isolated minor scuffs and stains to the text block. Else very good to near fine. 272pp. 7.625" x 5.25" x 1.375." 12mo.

The dust jacket flap reads in part: "A thrilling, red-blooded tale of a picturesque character against the background of hell-roaring towns when men drank, quarreled, killed, and went about their business… Gordon Lillie, as Pawnee Bill, the hero of countless men and boys of this and past generations… before him were cattle thieves, horse thieves, Indians, desperadoes, women with hard eyes and painted cheeks. He stood on the threshold of a career that was to be one of the most colorful and stirring in the annals of the glamorous Southwest… "

"The Blazing Horizon" is one of Gordon Lillie's most well-known titles, and features himself (referred to as both "Gordon Lillie" and as "Pawnee Bill"), as its narrator. The volume was published by The White House Publishers in 1929, after its publication by NEA Service, Inc. in 1927. Pawnee Bill's other books are of the same sensational character, including "Thirty Years Among the Pawnee Indians" (1929).

Gordon Lillie earned his moniker "Pawnee Bill" by serving as a Pawnee interpreter attached to William F. Cody's incredibly popular "Buffalo Bill's Wild West" show after 1883. From 1888-1908, "Pawnee Bill" presented various iterations of his own rival Western-themed traveling circus. In 1908, Cody merged his outfit with Lillie's to create the "Two Bills' Show," which would fold in 1913.
