19th C. Military & Political Notables Incl. C.F. Adams, W. H. Emory, G. Bancroft, & T.B. Reed, 4 pcs

A small lot of letters and documents autographed by nineteenth-century American military commanders and politicians, ca. 1857-1891. Signers include Charles F. Adams, William H. Emory, George Bancroft, and Thomas B. Reed.

The lot is comprised of, in chronological order:

1. A 1p autograph letter signed by American diplomat Charles F. Adams (1807-1886), as "C.F. Adams" near lower right. Written in Quincy, Massachusetts on September 6, 1857 on a sheet of pale off-blue paper trimmed to an overall size of 4.125" x 6.5." Expected wear including light paper folds, else near fine. In a letter to a Washington, D.C. autograph collector, Adams wrote in part: "It is not easy for me to supply letters to the constant demand for them…Of Samuel Adams I have none to spare. He was a very distant connexion [sic]…" In fact, Samuel Adams was the second cousin of John Adams, Charles F. Adams's paternal grandfather.

2. A partly printed and partly manuscript Civil War-dated document entitled "Consolidated Morning Report of First Brigade of Peck's Division Commanded by Brig. Genl W.H. Emory," signed by William H. Emory (1811-1887), as "WH Emory / C B Gnl" recto at lower right. Dated July 10, 1862, and written near Harrison's Landing, Virginia. Docketed verso. Expected wear including folds, wrinkles, and edge darkening, else near fine. Measures 25.75" x 8.375" unfolded. Just four months earlier, on March 17, 1862, Emory had been promoted to Brigadier General of Volunteers in the Union Army. The First Brigade consisted of troops from Maine, New York, and Pennsylvania.

3. A 1p autograph letter signed by George Bancroft (1800-1891), U.S. Secretary of the Navy between 1845-46, and signed by him as "Geo. Bancroft" at lower right. Written in Rome, Italy, on January 14, 1873 on watermarked cream paper. Overall light toning, a central horizontal paper fold, and some rust traces in the upper right corner, else very good to near fine. 3.875" x 6." Bancroft wrote in part: "On receiving your most kind + most welcome note of friendship and remembrance, it was my purpose to make my answer in person…" During Bancroft's tenure as Secretary of the Navy, the Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland was established in 1845.

4. A 1p autograph letter signed by Thomas B. Reed (1839-1902), the Republican U.S. Congressman from Maine, as "T.B. Reed" at lower right. Dated December 15, 1891 and inscribed on stationery paper with "House of Representatives U.S. / Washington, D.C." letterhead. Expected light paper folds, else near fine. 5.5" x 9." Reed wrote this thank you regarding a "print of [the] Washington Monument as they meant it to be in 1850 and for the other extracts which it will be useful to retain…"

All items will ship with signature required, and full insurance. Most items are sent via Federal Express, with P. O. Box addresses being sent through USPS. We insure through Berkley Asset Protection with rates of $.70 per $100 of value, among the lowest insurance rates in the industry. Our shipping department cameras document every package, both outgoing and incoming, for maximum security. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.

Upon winning your item(s), you will receive an invoice with our in-house shipping and handling fees included. ***We will ship to the address as it appears on your invoice. If any changes to the shipping address need to be made, you must inform us immediately.***

International shipments: In order to comply with our insurance provider, all international shipments will be sent via Fed Ex and customs paperwork will show a value of $1.00. International buyers should contact our office directly with any questions regarding this policy.
