1951 Official Score Book, "Jackie Robinson's All Stars, Billy Raimondi's Major-Minor Leaguers"
Pamphlet/Booklet

A 4pp printed bifold booklet, being "Jackie Robinson's All Stars / Billy Raimondi's Major-Minor Leaguers / Official Score Book" (San Francisco, California: Telegraph Press, Printers, ca. 1951). Inscribed as: "Nov - 8, 51 Oakland Cal." along the left edge of the second page. The Official Score Book contains two blank score cards for Jackie Robinson's and Billy Raimondi's picks, hand-inscribed "10" and "5." The back cover page features a glowing testimonial of Jackie Robinson. Expected wear including even toning, scattered wrinkles and chips, and mounting traces on the back cover page. Else very good to near fine. 6.25" x 10."

In 1951 when this booklet was published, Major League Baseball was still in the initial stages of desegregation.
Jackie Robinson (1919-1972), the first African American player to transcend the color line in the MLB, had done so just four years earlier, in April 1947. All of "Jackie Robinson's All Stars" highlighted by Robinson here for special mention were baseball players of color who had played or were currently playing in the Negro Leagues. Of these players, only Larry Doby and Luke Easter had already joined the MLB, following Robinson's blazing trail. Larry Doby was the second African American player and the first from the American League to join the MLB when he debuted for the Cleveland Indians in July 1947. Luke Easter would break through in 1949 by joining the Cleveland Indians' roster. Robinson's pick Gene Baker followed two years later, by signing with the Cleveland Indians in 1953.

In the tribute to Jackie Robinson on the back cover page, the booklet states in part: "Jackie Robinson, who many observers rate as baseball's greatest player, has won a new distinction - he is now hailed as the greatest of all around athletes in America's history… Jackie was 'Rookie of the Year' in his debut. The next year he was voted 'Most Valuable Player' in the National league. He has led the league in batting, in steals of home, in making double plays from second base. Above his slugging and speed, however, is the flame that burns brightest of all - his competitive spirit…"

Coincidentally, the booklet date of November 8, 1951 happens to be when New York Yankees catcher Yogi Berra was awarded the MVP of the American League.
A wonderful piece of ephemera from the Golden Age of baseball!
