Description:

A magnificent portrait of Washington in his role as a Mason

(GEORGE WASHINGTON) Lithograph, WASHINGTON AS A FREEMASON (Cincinnati: Strobridge & Co. Lithographers, 1867) 18" x 23" Light scattered foxing, some light to moderate toning toward top right, a few minor surface abrasions, else very good.

A magnificent full-length portrait of Washington wearing a masonic apron, with trowel in one hand and mallet in the other, forms the centerpiece of his wonderfully colorful print, who is flanked at the top corners with portraits of Lafayette and Andrew Jackson. Beneath Washington's mallet lies a school offering a statement attributed to Washington: "The grand object of Masonry is to promote the happines[s] of the Human Race." Below his portrait the lithograph states the important dates of his Masonic tenure: "INITATED NOVEMBER 4th. 1752, IN FREDERICKSBURG LODGE No. 4 VIRGINIA, PASSED, AMRCH 3d 1753 RAISED AUGUST 4th. 1763."
