Abraham Lincoln
Washington, DC, ca. 1864
1864 Lincoln Lecture by "Father of the Statue of Liberty" Édouard Laboulaye
Pamphlet/Booklet
A transcript of the speech "The Great Friend of America, on the Presidential Election" by Professor Édouard René Lefèbvre de Laboulaye, published by the Union Congressional Committee. Fourteen pages. 5.33 x 8.25 inches, Washington, 1864. This speech was delivered at the Department of State and read by the American Counsel at Paris. Disbound, bearing spindle holes at left margin and light wear, overall very good. Ex: Forrest H. Sweet, with the original manila envelope and typed description.

It reads, in extreme small part: "…The election of the President may assure the triumph or the ruin of the North, it will decide the question of Union or Separation…Two names are presented: that of Lincoln, and that of McClellan…Mr. Lincoln represents a policy the most compact…Maintenance of the Union, the abolition of slavery…Mr. McClellan protests his devotion to the Union, his desire to re-establish concord and peace…Reestablishment of the Union such as may be, Slavery continuing a domestic question, that is slavery continuing…To the profit of its egotism and its ambition the South has destroyed without pity the work of Washington, and raised its hands against the country. The evil once recognized, the remedy was sought for. Mr. Lincoln has been the interpreter of the national will, when to the upholding of the Union as the object of the war he added the abolition of slavery…I do not mean to assail the men of the South [as] it is that fatal institution which has blinded and destroyed them…Abandoned by Europe, encircled and by degrees to self-exhaustion; it must give way…Will the American Democracy let itself be again deceived by a party for third years has always led it astray?...No, I will never believe that a generous spirited nation, which has already more than once astonished Europe by its energy and perseverance, should yield miserably to discouragement, when with a last effort it can crush the rebellion…".

Édouard René Lefèbvre de Laboulaye (1811-1883) was the chairman of the French Anti-Slavery Society, an expert on the American Constitution and zealous supporter of the Union cause. He was also the author of the three-volume work on the political theory of the United States, published between 1855-1866. In 1865, and at the end of the Civil War, he proposed creating a statue celebrating the United States. Ten years later, Laboulaye's friend Bartholdi would bring this wish to fruition with his masterwork, "Liberty Enlightening the World."
