Description:

1861 "The New York Herald" Re: Hostile Opposition to Lincoln's Election

8pp, measuring 15.5" x 22", New York, dated January 7, 1861. An issue of "The New York Herald", No. 8,886, detailing growing tensions within the country in the lead up to the Civil War, including talks of secession and opposition to the inauguration of Lincoln. With articles such as: "The President Determined to Maintain Laws. The Position of Maryland…The Secession Feeling in Virginia", "The Inauguration of Lincoln at Washington, To the Editor of the Herald", and "The News from Washington - The Proposition of the Border States". There is also a short article reporting on a brutal murder of a slave master committed by four slaves. The newspaper has flattened folds with light edge toning throughout. Almost entirely separated at the vertical centerfold. Minor edge chipping, with some paper loss at the lower-left corner.

The letter to the editor concerning Lincoln reads in part: "The Wide Awake organization was originated in compliance with the demands of young men, many of them beardless boys, whose enthusiasm could be better wrought up to the proper mitch by some military demonstration than by any other process…The threatening aspect of affairs at the South, and the repeated announcement that Mr. Lincoln should never take the oath of office at Washington, gave birth to a feeling in the more impulsive of the Wide Awake that has finally resulted in the construction of a secret society, with the known, though not publicly avowed, design of sustaining the President-elect by force of arms.

Another revealing article is entitled "Important Address of Governor Hicks, of Maryland" and provides the state's feelings on the growing tensions. Reading in part: "I firmly believe that a division of this government would inevitably produce civil war. The secession leaders in South Carolina and the fanatical demagogues of the North have alike proclaimed that such would be the result, and no man of sense, in my opinion, can question it. What could the Legislature do in this crisis if convened to remove the present troubles which beset the Union? We are told by the leading spirits of the South Carolina Convention that neither the election of Mr. Lincoln, nor the non-execution of the Fugitive Slave law, nor both combined, constitute their grievances. They declare that the real cause of their discontent dates as far back as 1833…"
